DIFFERENT TYPES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
One source might be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about renewable energy. You might be familiar with solar power or wind turbines near your home. These are both valid options. Renewable energy comes from many other sources. Scroll down to learn more!
SOLAR ENERGY
The sun has been producing energy for billions of years and has not run out. Its heat is used to give plants the energy they need. We have, over time, developed technology that can collect and convert solar energy into electricity. Many solar power systems today can heat water and power homes. Solar energy does not pollute the atmosphere or produce carbon dioxide.
WIND ENERGY
The wind is caused by uneven heating of the Earth’s surface by sunlight. Different types of land absorb the heat from the sun differently. The air above the ground heats up quicker, expands, then rises to make wind. Wind energy can be used to produce electricity today. To have renewable energy, wind turbines are placed throughout the country.
GEOTHERMAL POWER
Geothermal heat energy is produced and stored on Earth. This renewable energy source is continually produced on Earth. People use the power to heat their homes and for electricity.
HYDROPOWER
Hydropower is the largest source of renewable energy in the United States. This power comes from water, and power plants are often located near the water source. Water vapors that condense in clouds eventually fall as rain. This precipitation is collected in rivers and streams, evaporating and restarting the process. Water can generate significant energy when it moves. This can then be converted into electricity.
BIOMASS
Biomass can be defined as a material made from biomass, which is a mixture of plants and animals. Biomass can burn as fuel because it contains stored energy from sunlight. Although biomass can only be burned, it can also be used to produce other forms of energy, such as methane gas and ethanol.
